Shade is the whole design problem

Attached structures need a properly detailed connection to the existing roof. That junction is a common leak point, and during monsoon it gets tested hard. Freestanding ramadas avoid the tie in entirely and give more placement freedom, which is often the better answer when the ideal shade location is not against the house.

All of these are permitted structures in most jurisdictions. They require footings sized for uplift, because monsoon wind loads on a large flat roof are significant. Structures built without engineered footings come apart in storms, and we see the results every summer.

Countertops need to handle both thermal expansion and direct sun without discoloring, and some popular indoor materials do neither.

Pool enclosure walls and gates carry specific safety code requirements around height, gaps, and self latching hardware. These are inspected, and they exist for good reason.
